Speeding Concerns

Speeding Concerns

21st of October, 2021

In 2020, Whittingham Parish Council installed solar powered Spid Indicator Devices (SPID) on Whittingham Lane and Halfpenny Lane.

The data reveals that 84.5% of vehicles passing the Whittingham Lane SPID were exceeding the 30mph speed limit - with speeds recorded in excess of 70mph. 62% of south bound traffic on Halfpenny Lane also exceeded the 30mph limit.

The Parish Council is working with Lancashire County Council and the Road Safety Partnership to reduce the number of incidents and the mobile police enforcement camera is now active in the area.

In addition, Lancashire County Council has issued the Parish Council with a Community Toolkit which contains practical ideas for reducing traffic speed. A copy of the Community Toolkit can be accessed in the box to the left.

The Parish Council is happy to support some of the ideas and would welcome feedback from residents regarding which schemes would be most effective and if any residents would like to get involved.

Please email the Clerk with your thoughts using the 'contact us' button on the website or contact a local Councillor whose details are on the Councillor information page.

To illustrate that there is a safety concern, the Parish Council invited the Deputy Police Crime Commissioner to the January 2023 meeting and requested local speed checks.

Residents can accompany them on the checks by contacting PCSO Chloe Pearson by email at [email protected]Alternatively, residents can register to volunteer with the Community Road Watch scheme - using this link https://lancsvp.org.uk/opportunities/community-road-watch/

If you believe there is a road safety concern in Whittingham, please help us to resolve the issue by reporting it on this link. https://lancsroadsafety.co.uk/submit-concern/

The Deputy Police Crime Commissioner also asked us to promote 'Operation Snap' - a police initiative which encourages members of the public to send dashcam footage of dangerous driving or other motoring offences to the police.

More information can be found on the link below. If you have any comments or concerns about the initiative please email [email protected]
